How to change your CRA remitter type

The Remitter Type tells the CRA how often your business must submit payroll deductions like income tax, CPP, and EI. Setting this correctly helps ensure timely remittances and keeps your payroll compliant with CRA requirements.
Tip: Be sure to confirm this setting before the first payroll of the year—the remitter type determines when payments are due.
Understanding remitter types
Here’s a quick overview of CRA remitter type options:
Remitter type | Description | Payment frequency |
Quarterly | For small employers with a strong compliance history. The average monthly withholding amount (AMWA) in the calendar year before the previous calendar year was less than $3,000. | Every 3 months |
Regular | Most common type. The AMWA in the calendar year before the previous calendar year was less than $25,000. | By the 15th of the following month |
Accelerated – Threshold 1 | For larger payrolls. The AMWA in the calendar year before the previous calendar year was at least $25,000 but not more than $99,999.99. | Twice per month |
Accelerated – Threshold 2 | For high-volume remitters. The AMWA in the calendar year before the previous calendar year was at least $100,000. | Within 3 business days of each pay run |

How to update the remitter type
1. Go to business settings
From the main navigation menu, select Settings
2. Open the Details tab
This section includes your CRA account information
3. Select the remitter type
Click the Remitter Type field
Use the dropdown menu to choose the appropriate type
4. Save your changes
Click Save
The updated remitter type will now be used for payroll submissions.
